Achieving V shaped physique — the optimal shoulder exercise to add shoulder width

Exercising your side delts can add impressive width, but one exercise gives you the best bang for the buck.

Based on studies, women are most attracted to men with a V shaped physique, meaning the shoulders are wider than the waist, creating a V taper from the front view.

Given the above, the question becomes how to optimally improve your V taper since the typical case is shoulders are not as wide as desired.

While you can’t readily change your bone structure, you can add mass to your shoulders and thus increase the width. The ‘lateral deltoid’, or ‘side delt’, is what determines the ‘width’ of your shoulders as far as musculature.

Targeting the lateral deltoid directly however is hard because most ‘side delt’ exercises bring in a large amount of either trapezoid or supraspinatus to assist, meaning the side delts are often underwhelmed in terms of exercise intensity when doing standard exercises such as the usual side dumbbell raise.

After testing a number of various exercises, I have found one that will provide the desired direct targeting of the side delt, and that has been very efficient in terms of targeting and adding mass to the side delt muscle.
